As part of our passionate commitment to seeding informed conversation about the physical form and social experience of New York City, we announce an essay competition in connection to the pair of exhibitions organized by the Museum of the City of New York and the Architectural League that celebrate the 200th anniversary of the plan that established Manhattan’s street grid. This year, the Commissionersʼ Plan, the framework that established Manhattanʼs famous street grid, celebrates its 200th anniversary. The city’s habitual pearly gray daylht adds, it seems, an extra layer or patina of ardor and melancholy to the Canadian-born Agnes Martin’s extraordinary mid-to-late-career paintings—images made, for the most part, on square canvases measuring seventy-two inches, and filled with stripes of varying widths and hues that remain, twelve years after Martin’s death in 2004, at age ninety-two, some of the more snificant creations about spirituality, beauty, and painting itself that modernism has ever known. The photographs, drawn from Weems’s ), Weems initiates a dialogue with her own oeuvre, in particular a series whose title, which contains a term commonly used to refer to non-Caucasians from the nineteenth century until around 1960, makes direct reference to race.
